Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council offers several eco-excursions throughout the year.  We focus on outdoor activities such as biking, bird-watching, canoeing, hiking, backpacking and camping in the Cross Timbers region; usually staying in Texas.  Occasionally, trips may be planned into Oklahoma.  Check out our Calendar of Events for scheduled eco-excursions.

UPCOMING ECO-EXCURSIONS

We are currently planning more trips for the future.  Upcoming trips include:  hiking in search of the ancient Post Oaks and kayaking/canoeing at Lake Mineral Wells State Park; biking the Lake Ray Roberts State Park and Greenbelt; canoeing the Brazos River; tree ID hike; wildflower ID hike; and many more events are currently in the planning stages.  Check the Calendar of Events page for dates, locations and contact information for these trips.

PAST ECO-EXCURSIONS

Canoe & Kayaking trip on the Trinity
Thursday, June 14, 2007
Trinity River in Fort Worth

CTUFC members & guests went on an urban canoe trip on the Trinity River in Fort Worth!  The put-in point was just below Benbrook dam & take out was in Trinity Park.  The group had a nice day for kayaking & canoeing.

The put-in point below Benbrook dam.

The first two miles along the Trinity.  Notice the riparian habitat, shaded waterway & calm waters.

Lunchtime!

Lunch for everyone.  Or maybe just a snack...

There were several portage points along the route.  And plenty of opportunities for tipping the canoe!  Anyone up for a swim?

Dinosaur Valley State Park Birding Trip
Saturday, May 19, 2007 @ 7:30am
Dinosaur Valley State Park
"In Search of the Golden-cheeked Warbler" Bird Hike & Plant Hike

Join Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council on a bird hike in search of a glimpse of the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler at Dinosaur Valley State Park.  Don't miss your chance to see a very special bird that breeds nowhere else in the world besides central Texas.  Cost of the excursion is $10.  Plus there is a $5 entrance fee into the park - payable at the gate.  Please RSVP with Michelle Villafranca no later than Friday, May 11.  Excursion limited to 10 people.

For those of you who like to camp out & backpack, some CTUFC members will be camping out Friday & Saturday nights.  If you would like to join us, please contact Michelle so she can give you more details.

Last year's trip...
Some Cross Timbers members went on a backpacking and primitive camping trip to Dinosaur Valley State Park.  The next morning, the remainder of the group (who didn't camp out) met at the trailhead and spent the day leisurely hiking through the hills and woods of Dinosaur Valley looking for Golden-cheeked Warblers (GCWA).  Michelle Villafranca, who formerly conducted GCWA surveys for The Nature Conservancy of Texas led the bird-watching hike.  Golden-cheeked Warblers are neotropical migrant birds who are listed as federally endangered species.  They winter in southern Mexico down to Honduras and spend the spring and summer (their breeding season) in central Texas.  Their range reaches up into north central Texas.

Habitat for Humanity Tree Planting Blitz
November 2006
Fort Worth

Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council volunteers planted trees for new Habitat for Humanity homeowners to enjoy.  What a great way to make a house feel like a home...and reduce utility bills as well!

Lake Mineral Wells State Park Kayaking & Camping Trip (oh...and the annual meeting!)
October 2006
Lake Mineral Wells State Park

Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council members attended the annual meeting at Lake Mineral Wells State Park to discuss the coming year's action items and vote on new Executive Committee and Board members.  Following the meeting, several members stayed to hike in the Western Cross Timbers, as well as kayak and then camp out.  Some members went on a naturalist-guided Cross Timbers hike the next morning.  Fun was had by all.
